Wine Walk: from the Romans to the Middle Ages

5 reviews

A wine walk through and across Antwerp and the Low Countries, from the Romans to the Middle Ages.

We stroll through the city’s streets and squares while diving into its rich wine history and urban past. Along the way, you’ll discover:

  • why wine has been cultivated in Antwerp and the Low Countries since Roman times, and what traces of that remain today

  • how monastic communities shaped wine production

  • what the plague in the Middle Ages had to do with wine

  • how the Fall of Antwerp, the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and the Huguenots are connected to South African winemaking

  • and… what wine actually tasted like in earlier centuries

Beyond wine through the ages, you’ll also meet historical figures who played a key role in both Antwerp’s history and the evolution of wine culture, such as Charlemagne, the Spanish king Philip II, William of Orange, and Philips of Marnix.

The stories are supported by prints and photographs, giving you a clearer picture—quite literally—of all these fascinating insights.

After this wine walk, you’ll see both wine and Antwerp in a completely new light.

What does the tour look like?
  • We start with a glass of wine to make sure we have enough fuel to begin our walk.
  • Halfway through, we taste a smaller amount—just enough to keep our spirits up without weighing down our walking shoes.
  • At the end, we taste two more wines, again in the style we explored during the tour.
